PRESS RELEASE - RAIL TRAIL HIKE

For Immediate Release

Scarborough Junction Community hosts West Scarborough Rail Trail hike

The Scarborough Junction Community invites all Torontonians to join local residents on a hike through the West Scarborough Rail Trail on Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m. to support this critical project in one of the city’s fast-growing neighbourhoods as the city approaches election day.

First proposed more than 50 years ago, the West Scarborough Rail Trail has garnered renewed interest from Scarborough Junction Community members in 2022 due to an increase in planned and proposed development. The area will see an influx of more than 50,000 new residents in the next few years, but progress on the trail has all but stalled since a staff report in 2007.

“After decades of neglect, it’s time for our elected officials to rescue this abandoned rail line and transform it into usable public space, similar to The Junction’s popular West Toronto Railpath,” said Misha Perozak, founder of the Scarborough Junction Community. “Current and future west Scarborough residents need the trail, a park, and connections to other pedestrian and cycling amenities to be a priority as the community continues to grow.”

The Scarborough Junction Community’s vision for the trail includes a multi-use pedestrian and cycling trail featuring native plants and trees that connects the surrounding neighbourhoods to new and existing parks, playgrounds, pollinator gardens, public transit, commercial destinations, the Meadoway, and more.

The hike will start at Warden Hilltop Community Centre and continue south along the rail trail over St. Clair Avenue East, past Warden subway station, to Pilkington Avenue. The hike will take approximately one hour to complete and will go ahead rain or shine. Warden Hilltop Community Centre is accessible by public transit via Warden subway station or by car, with parking available at the community centre.
